SUSTAINABLE CHILDREN SURGERY

Towards a sustainable ecosystem for children's surgery

Our commitment

Sustainable Children Surgery works to make pediatric surgery accessible, safe, and sustainable in low-resource countries.

We work alongside local stakeholders to strengthen health systems, develop adapted programs, train teams, and advocate for every child's right to receive the surgical care they need.

Key figures

30%
of the global burden of disease is treatable through surgery
67%
of surgical needs are unmet in low- and middle-income countries
1.7 billion
children worldwide lack access to safe, affordable, and timely surgical and anesthesia care
85%
of children will require a surgical intervention before the age of 15 in low- and middle-income countries

Our approach:

sustainably strengthening pediatric surgery

We adopt an ecosystemic vision of pediatric surgery by strengthening all components necessary for a safe and sustainable service: infrastructure, equipment, maintenance, training, quality of care, research, governance, and community engagement.

With our partner countries, we co-construct adapted solutions, from system analysis to implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of best practices. This integrated approach creates a virtuous circle where each element supports the others for a lasting impact.

Our actions:

From infrastructure to skills: developing tomorrow's pediatric surgery

We operate in Africa, particularly in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Congo Brazzaville, to sustainably strengthen the pediatric surgery ecosystem.

Our actions cover the creation and equipping of specialized services, as well as improving the quality and safety of care through standards, protocols, and monitoring tools. We train all involved professionals: surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, midwives, and community health workers, and support national policies through research and data analysis.

We also advocate for the integration of pediatric surgery into health systems and work with communities to strengthen prevention, overcome cultural barriers, and improve access to care, ensuring a lasting impact for children.
