Dr Jim Wilde

Born in the Netherlands and educated in Switzerland and the UK, Dr Wilde eventually returned home to study medicine at Leiden University.

He initially trained as an "adult" surgeon before pursuing his dream of working in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). His first job took him to Nepal, followed by a second in Malawi, where he discovered paediatric surgery.

It was a revelation, this was where he wanted to be. The years he spent working in Africa had a profound impact on him, both personally and professionally.

He subsequently trained in paediatric surgery in Amsterdam under Prof Hugo Heij, and in Cape Town, South Africa, under Prof Alastair Millar. Since then, he has practised, and hopes to continue practising, paediatric surgery in its broadest sense.

His particular areas of interest include HPB surgery, oncology, neonatal, and thoracic surgery, while always keeping one leg firmly planted in LMICs, across both the African and South American continents.
