In Burkina Faso, domestic accidents (burns, falls, wounds) are among the main causes of child hospitalization. A 2022 study conducted in the Orodara health district showed that most mothers did not know what actions to take in the event of a domestic accident. To address this, a program, in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Burkina Faso, launched a radio awareness campaign in the local language, Dioula. In August 2023, a training session prepared district radio hosts to conduct interactive programs on domestic accidents, particularly burns. Since September 2023, a weekly broadcast, followed by a re-broadcast, informs families about actions to take and to avoid, with nearly a hundred airings per year.
Pediatric surgery begins long before the operating room: by raising families’ awareness of prevention, this program helps reduce the number of children injured daily.
